7. AFRICA AND SECRET CULTS

A secret society is a club or organization whose activities and inner functioning are concealed from non members, having a ritual demanding a pledge of commitment and secrecy, prescribing ceremonies of a sacred character. Secret societies are institutions which absolutely hide their rules, activities, names of their adherents, signs, symbol, and codes from the rest of the public who are not initiated or who are not part of the organization.

As a rule, the members of these societies are bound to the strictest secrecy concerning all the business of the association by oath or promise or word of honor, and often under the threat of severe punishment in case of its violation. If such secret society has higher and lower degrees, the members of the higher degree must be equally careful to conceal their secrets from their brethren of a lower degree. In certain secret societies, the members are not allowed to know even the names of their highest officers. Secret societies were founded to promote certain ideal aims, to be obtained not by violence but by moral measures. By this, they are distinguished from conspiracies and secret plots which are formed to attain a particular object through violent means. Secret societies may be religious, scientific, political or social.

A cult could be seen as a set of practices and beliefs of a group in relation to a local god, a small group or religious activists whose beliefs are typically secret, esoteric and individualistic. A secret cult could be seen as an organization whose activities are kept away from the knowledge of others or a group of people whose activities are carried out in exclusive locations and unusual times without being exposed to the uninitiated. These activities are essentially covert, disguised and are usually carried out behind closed doors. I ask again what cults and secret cults in Nigeria have done so far to promote African growth, development and civilization.

Nigeria is a home to numerous secret societies, cults, secret cults and strange religious activities. In Nigeria, most secret societies and cults have transformed into institutions of evil against the nation and non-initiates who may be part of the society at large. Their activities range from witchcraft, voodoos and occult practices. Secret cults now exist in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. During conflicts they kill fellow students and maim anyone who opposes them, threaten, rape innocent women, steal from non initiates, intimidate and extort money from non initiates, catalyze rampage in schools, indulge in exam malpractices and commit numerous carnage in institutions of higher learning and it is time institutions of higher learning and the government of Nigeria did something about this ugly situation.

In America, you find numerous gangs amongst African Americans fighting over women and superiority. Of all that America has to offer, most African Americans have chosen to become gangsters instead of acquiring skills to improve their lives. I have decided to deal with these issues because from all I have observed, most of us are narrow minded and this reveals why we chase rats when our houses are on fire.
